Kargil, November 11: The book release ceremony of “Rehnuma-e-Phrin”, authored by renowned Purgi poet Haji Mohammad Hussain Rehnuma, was organized by the Purig Cultural and Literary Society (PCLS) Kargil in collaboration with Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (LAACL) Kargil.
The event was graced by Haji Hanifa Jan, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Ladakh, as the Chief Guest. Among the distinguished guests were Khadim Hussain, Councillor Baroo-Minji Constituency, and Akhon Asgar Ali Basharat, Padma Shri awardee, along with prominent poets, writers, and students from across the district.
The program began with a melodious Nazm presented by students of Mutharry Public School Baroo, written by the author himself. The soulful performance set a graceful tone for the event.
Syed Hadi Shah, a noted writer, spoke about the evolution of folk poetry in Kargil and the establishment of the first Mushaira in 1997. He praised the author’s work, noting that Rehnuma’s poetry reflects the diverse emotions and realities of society. “Even great poets like Ghalib and Iqbal had critics,” he remarked, “but Rehnuma truly represents the common voice of Kargil.”
Padma Shri Dr. Asgar Ali Basharat, in his address, lauded the poet’s contribution to Purgi literature, saying, “Purgi sakti chareena, yang gulab chik yas,” meaning “another flower has bloomed in the garden of Purgi language.” He expressed admiration for Rehnuma’s poetic depth and dedication to cultural preservation.
The author Haji Mohammad Hussain Rehnuma shared insights about his work, humbly stating that he does not consider himself a great writer but a voice for the common people. He explained that his book covers multiple genres—religion, wisdom, patriotism, humanity, and love for one’s native village—all expressed in simple, relatable language. Quoting a few verses from his work, he urged the youth to learn and preserve their mother tongue.
In his address, Hon’ble MP Haji Hanifa Jan congratulated the poet and appreciated the organisers for their efforts in promoting regional literature. He expressed pride that a talented Purgi writer has emerged from their region, inspiring others to write.
He also acknowledged the pivotal role played by LAACL and PCLS in preserving tribal languages like Purgi, Shina, and Dardi, and emphasized the importance of developing their written scripts.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mohammad Ali Tak, Assistant Director, Tourism, who extended gratitude to all guests, poets, writers, and media personnel. He remarked that “Rehnuma-e-Phrin” will serve as a valuable source for researchers and scholars, as it embraces a rich variety of themes and genres.
The ceremony ended with the memorable words of William Wordsworth: “poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful emotions.” A sentiment beautifully reflected in the poetic world of Md. Rehnuma.
