Washington, June 23 President Joe Biden said on Thursday that he is “deeply disappointed” by the US Supreme Court decision to strike down a New York State gun control law as unconstitutional.
Earlier on Thursday, the US Supreme Court struck down the New York State law requiring individuals who wished to carry a firearm outside their home to prove they have “proper cause” based on a special need for self-defense.
“I am deeply disappointed by the Supreme Court’s ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen,” Biden said in a statement. “This ruling contradicts both common sense and the Constitution and should deeply trouble us all.”
Biden also urged the US states to continue enacting and enforcing so-called “commonsense” gun control laws.
The Justice Department issued a statement expressing disagreement with the US Supreme Court’s ruling and affirmed their commitment to enforce and defend federal firearms laws.
Federal officials will continue to partner with state, local and tribal authorities to address gun violence in the United States, the Justice Department said.
There have been more than 214 mass shootings in the United States this year, according to Gun Violence Archive data.
