Bharat trade bandh tomorrow in protest against FDI in retail

New Delhi: All trade activities in Delhi and other parts of the country will come to a stop tomorrow with the Confederation of All India traders calling for an all India ‘Bharat trade bandh’ in protest against the government’s decision to announce FDI in the retail sector.

Addressing a press conference here, CAIT secretary general Praveen Khandelwal said more than five crore traders, hawkers, labourers, farmers and people of other sectors of the retail trade will participate in the trade bandh.

“There will be no commercial activity across the country,” Mr Khandelwal said.

However, essential activities like chemist shops will continue.

Mr Khandelwal said CAIT is holding a protest dharna tomorrow at Jantar Mantar which will be joined by NDA convenor Sharad Yadav, BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat, CPI general secretary A B Bardhan and leaders of all political parties.

“There will be complete trade bandh in Delhi, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Uttrakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and other states and union territories,” he said.
