On 5 August 2019, the Government of India revoked the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir—a state which has been the subject of dispute between India, Pakistan, and China since 1947. What has followed since is complete communication lockdown, restrictions and shutdown.
Marriages are said to be the most delightful occasions in one’s life and also important celebrations that mark it. In every society event of marriage of kith and kin lights up whole clan or family with joy.
Due to current turbulence since more than a month the wedding season in Kashmir Valley is witnessing an unusually high number of marriage ceremony cancellations due to existing restrictions. In the Valley, many weddings have either been cancelled, postponed or are simply being conducted as stripped down. In nutshell, the marriage season has been the worst causality of the conflict.
Streets after streets are filled with examples of disappointed people due to dampened marriages.
Riyaz Ahmad War is a prospective bridegroom from Maisuma locality is one such example. He is based in Saudi Arabia doing job in engineering sector and was slated to have his wedding function to be held on 15, 16 September and now the same has been cancelled, perhaps to be now held in simple way in month of October.
“ Our marriage season , our happiness and little joys have got killed due to present turmoil and turbulence .We are hopeful that one day our Kashmir will rise above pain and suffering to see light at end of long dark tunnel, “ states Bashir Ahmad, a commoner .
