Mexico City, Nov 22 At least five people were killed and 56 injured after a tour bus veered off a highway in Mexico’s Gulf Coast state of Veracruz, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
According to the state Civil Protection Secretariat, the double-decker bus ended up under a bridge, hitting one of the pillars.
The cause of the crash has yet to be determined.
Multiple rescue teams rushed to the scene and transported the injured to nearby hospitals, the agency said.
While authorities were working to remove the wreckage, the highway remained open.
According to Mexico’s Federal Roads and Bridges and Related Services, a federal government agency, the country ranks seventh worldwide in the number of traffic accidents and third in Latin America.
