Bogota, June 28 Forty nine inmates on Tuesday died while around 50 others wounded after an alleged prison break took place in Colombia’s Tulua, media reports said.
The incident took place in the the local prison of Tulua, a city in the Valle del Cauca province, Blu Radio reported citing prison authority INPEC and the local fire department.
Colombian President Ivan Duque Marquez also expressed his regrets and solidarity to the beavered families.
Duque tweeted: “We regret the events that occurred in the prison of Tulua, Valle del Cauca. I am in contact with the director of the INPEC, General Tito Castellanos, and have given instructions to carry out investigations to clarify this terrible situation. My solidarity with the families of the victims.”
The tragedy happened between 1-2 am after inmates allegedly set fire to their mattresses while prison guards tried to thwart a prison break, Colombia’s online newspaper Colombia Reports cited Blu Radio as reporting.
About 200 inmates were being held in the ward where the fire outbreak took place, according to the Radio stations.
The radio cited prison authority as saying that many who died were charred to death while the bodies of others showed violence’s signs.
According to the local fire department, injured inmates were sent to medical centers in Tulua.
