3 dead bodies recovered, man rescued alive from avalanche site in Kupwara

Srinagar, January 6 (KMW): A man has been rescued alive from under the snow while three bodies have been recovered by joint teams of army, police and SDRF with the help of locals from the site of an avalanche near Sadhna Top in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, officials said today.

The man rescued alive was reportedly identified as Ghulam Nabi Bhat (50), son of Ali Mohammed Bhat, a resident of Kalmona, Kralpora.

One of the three bodies recovered has been identified as that of Muneer Hussain Shah.

An official said that a search is on for the other missing passengers.

At least eight passengers, including three women, went missing on Friday after a snow avalanche swept away a passenger cab they were travelling in, at high altitude, Khoni Nallah near Sadhna top, en-route border town Karnah in Kupwara district.

The driver of vehicle JK09-A 3249, identified as Zahoor Ahmad, and an eight- year-old boy, Suliman , both residents of Karnah tehsil, were rescued immediately after the mishap occurred around 3.30 PM.

A beacon officer of 109, RCC, identified as M P Singh, a resident of Varansi district of Uttar Pradesh was killed after he was swept away by the avalanche.

The officer was on the road clearance duty when the avalanche struck.
