17th CEC Cup Ice Hockey Championship Kicks Off at Biamathang, Kargil

Kargil, February 11, 2026: In Kargil , the 17th CEC Cup Ice Hockey Championship began today at the Ice Hockey Rink, Biamathang, Kargil, with great enthusiasm among players and sports enthusiasts.

A total of 29 men’s teams and 4 women’s teams from various parts of Kargil district are participating in the prestigious tournament, showcasing the growing passion for ice hockey in the region.

Acting Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Kacho Mohd Feroz, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. He formally inaugurated the championship by performing the ceremonial puck drop.

Speaking on the event Kacho Mohd Feroz said that ice hockey has become a strong identity of Ladakh and the Council is committed to promoting winter sports in the region. He stated that despite certain financial and administrative challenges, the tournament has been successfully organized with the joint efforts of the district administration and the Sports Department.

He further informed that several winter sports infrastructure projects, including skiing facilities at Drass, Linkipal and Zanskar, are in the pipeline and awaiting approvals. He also mentioned that the completion of the chilling system at the all weather indoor ice facility in Kargil will provide better training opportunities to young players throughout the year.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Imteeaz Kacho, who attended as Guest of Honour, said that such sporting events play a vital role in building strong character among the youth and help keep them away from drugs and other harmful activities. He emphasized the importance of engaging young people in positive and constructive platforms like sports.

Chief Medical Officer Kargil Dr. Liyaqat Ali, DYSSO Kargil Abid Ali, President of Kargil Ice Hockey Association, other officials and a large number of spectators were present on the occasion.

The championship is expected to continue over the coming days, drawing enthusiastic participation and support from across the district.
