Islamabad – Former president Pervez Musharraf on Saturday was sent on a 14-day-long judicial remand by the anti-terrorist court in the judges’ detention case. According to details, the order was issued by Judge Kausar Abbas Zaidi, whereby Musharraf is to re-appear in court on May 4.
The petitioner’s counsel, Ashraf Gujjar, had requested the court to order a physical remand of the retired general, but this was refused. Gujjar had also taken an objection to the fact that Musharraf was brought to the court with heavy security.
Earlier on Friday, the former general was arrested by the police from Chak Shahzad and sent to the Police Line Headquarters. This development came in the wake of the bail cancellation order by Islamabad High Court on Thursday, which had caused Musharraf to escape the court premises with the help of personal security.
Two other cases are also pending against Musharraf in Pakistani courts. Besides the illegal detention of 60 judges of the Supreme Court following the declaration of emergency in Novemeber 2007, he is also accused of involvement in a conspiracy to murder Benazir Bhutto in 2007 and over the 2006 killing of Baloch nationalist leader Akbar Khan Bugti.
The general who is the first former army chief and head of state to be arrested is being kept at the Officers’ Mess and given the suite of Inspector General of Police.
