Amman, June 28 At least 12 people were killed and 260 injured in a chlorine gas leakage in Jordon’s port of Aqaba, emergency relief coordinating agency said.
According to state-owned al-Mamlaka TV, video footage from a nearby CCTV showed container being transported by a crane when it dropped releasing a cloud of yellow, gaseous material onto a ship and inside the port.
Among 12 killed, eight were Jordanians.
National Center for Security and Crisis Management (NCSCM) said, “At 4:15 pm on Monday afternoon, a chlorine gas leak occurred in the port of Aqaba due to the fall and explosion of a tank containing this substance.”
A PSD spokesperson said that a team of hazardous materials specialists from Jordan’s Civil Defense were sent to the spot.
Meanwhile, the area has been quarantine, Jordan Civil Defense said.
By Monday evening local time, the toxic leak had been brought “under control” and no longer posed any risk, according to Jordan’s media minister Faisal Shboul, CNN quoted state news agency Petra reported.
