Traffic Police launches special drive to curb violations: IGP Traffic

JAMMU, MARCH 26(KMW): The Inspector General of Police (Traffic), J&K, Mr. J. P. Singh while addressing a Press Conference here today disclosed that It has been observed that the bikers especially youth resort to traffic violations viz. triple riding and riding the two wheelers without crash helmet. In order to ensure safety/security of the bikers and with a view to check this menace effectively, special drives have been started by Traffic Police in two cities of Srinagar/Jammu and Rural Jammu w.e.f. 09.03.2015. During the process as many as 1943 violators were challenged under the above said offences and an amount of Rs.2, 20,750/- has been realized as fine to serve as deterrence. The special drives, as such, shall continue till further orders. It has also been observed that the above said traffic violations contribute to the accidents and fatalities. The bikers are appealed to follow the traffic rules in letter and spirit otherwise their vehicles will be seized under relevant provisions of M. V. Act/Rules made there-under as an effective deterrence.
In a significant order Traffic Hqrs. J&K has withdrawn all the Traffic Check Posts from National Highway except for Pantha Chowk, Qazigund, Banihal, Ramban, Udhampur, Nagrota and Lakhanpur which are important to regulate the traffic in view of bad road condition. This has been done to eradicate the possibility of any unethical practices, which bring a bad name to the Police Department in general and Traffic Police in particular.
Traffic Police has also launched major campaign against the traffic violations across Jammu city. During the last seven days 1431 motorcyclists were challaned for tripple riding (72), not using crash helmet (1148) and driving without the Driving licence (211) and an fine to the tune of Rs.193800/- realized from the violators. The aim is to minimize the loss of life and limb caused due to accidents on the roads.
Special teams have also been constituted under the supervision of senior officers not below the rank of Inspector who would conduct the checking at important crossings and traffic points in the city-centre. It has also been decided to come down heavily on the drivers indulging in visible traffic violations viz. overloading, roof top loading, over-speeding, wrong parking/roadside parking, sudden stopping for picking/dropping the passengers, non-use of seat belts, jumping of Traffic Signal Lights, use of mobile phones while driving, triple riding on two wheelers, non-wearing of crash helmet, wheeling/stunt biking especially by the youth, driving under the influence of liquor and other traffic violations in particular. This shall be a continuous feature to minimize the traffic violations.
Most of the stakeholders like transporters, truck/matador/bus associations have been taken into confidence to help in improving the traffic management system. It has been enjoined upon the stakeholders and commuters to cooperate and abide by the traffic rules to avoid ugly incidents and accidents on the roads. Traffic Police is committed for the safety, regulation and smooth flow of traffic in the city which can be achieved with the active cooperation of all the stakeholders, road users and general public.
Shortly, a campaign is being launched along with local police, Municipal authorities, Motor Vehicle Department and traders federations to remove the encroachments and idle parking etc. from the city road as about 25% motorable roads are blocked by this avoidable hurdles.
In order to ensure speedy redressal of traffic related complaints, general public is welcome to register their complains on phone no. 0191-2578774 and 2459048 at any time. Similarly, complaints of malpractices etc. against the Traffic Police personnel can also be registered on the above said phone no.’s to help in nipping the evil in the bud.
In order to supplement the working of Traffic Police, DGP J&K has been pleased to order the attachment of 20 officials each from Jammu/Udhampur with Traffic police for their further deployment. The attachments of these officials will help in further improving the traffic management system.
Due to heavy rain/snowfall, one portion of road at Magarkote has sunk and needs to be addressed urgently otherwise, it can prove dangerous for the passengers and others travelling/moving on NHW-1A. It has therefore been decided to stop the movement of all types of vehicles on NHW-1 on 28th March, 2015 in order to address this stretch of road and make the same traffic worthy.
As many as 232 accidents have occurred in Jammu city during the month of February 2015, in which 23 persons lost their lives whereas 273 others were injured.
In order to check the traffic violations as many as 32,786 violators have been have challaned by the Traffic Police in Jammu city during the month of February 2015. The aim is to deter the violators.
Compound money to the tune of Rs.48,72,486/- has been realized from the violators during the above said period. This is in addition to the towing charges (for wrong parking) of Rs.5,46,086/- and Court fine of Rs.10.28,650/-realized by the Hon’ble Courts on the challans done by Traffic Police.
