Srinagar: Normal life was hit on Wednesday due to strike call given by Muthida Majlis Mashawrat (MMM) against the random arrests of separatist leaders in Kashmir Valley. Most of the educational institutions, business establishments, petrol pumps, shops and semi-government offices remained closed however the traffic was seen in full swing in uptown of Srinagar while as the shops in Civil Lines areas of Jawahar Nagar, Solina, Raj Bagh, Ram Bagh, Soanwar etc were seen opened throughout the day.
Light Motor Vehicles and public transport was seen plying in Lal Chowk and its adjoining areas while Students were seen rushing towards Kashmir University to appear in Entrance examinations. The University had not postponed the said examinations even in the wake of strike call given by MMM. Students faced lot of hardships due to non-availability of transport on major routes. “No public transport was available from Pulwama to Srinagar so we all students faced lot of difficulty. We can’t believe that we appeared in these examinations,†group of students from South Kashmir told.
Life in other districts of Valley was also hit due to strike call. Though in many parts of the Valley shops were opened and transport was seen plying on the roads, however over life got affected as most of the employees could not make it to their offices. There was thin attendance in offices in Anantnag, Pulwamma, Kulgam and Shopian.
Life was also affected in North Kashmir’s Baramullah, Bandipora, Ganderbal and Kupwara districts. Most of the shops and business establishments remained closed and children preferred to stay in their houses.
