Jammu: Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader Dalai Lama today said Kashmir held a significant place in Buddhism as the religion was spread in China and Korea by monks who used the ancient “Silk Route” passing through the region, to carry the Dhamma to faraway places.
After inaugurating a photo exhibition on ancient Buddhist historical places at Kala Kendra in this winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the Dalai Lama told reporters, “I am very happy and I have come here to see these pictures on ancient Buddhist sites.” On the Kashmir issue, he said, “India, in spite of some negative things here and there, but basically with the rule of law in an open society, you have complete freedom of speech.
“I think through talks, understanding and dialogue, things will improve,” he added.
About himself, he said, “In March this year, I handed over all my political responsibilities to an elected political leadership.
Not only have I retired, but the centuries old Dalai Lama institution has also ended.” “I voluntarily retired,” he added.
