New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today asked the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to put in place world’s best safety measures at nuclear plants all over the country. The directions were given at a Special Meeting which the Prime Minister had convened at his 7-Race Course Road residence this morning to review the safety precautions for nuclear installations.
The meeting, at the initiative of the Prime Minister, was called in the wake of the recent terrorist attack at Mehran Naval base in Karachi in Pakistan on May 22 and the Fukushima Nuclear disaster in Japan.
Official sources said here that the meeting was held as the government was “seriously concerned” at the developments in Karachi and Fukushima.
”The government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety and security of our vital installations, including nuclear,” a senior official said.
The meeting also deliberated on ‘Guidelines issued by the NDMA for ‘Management of Earthquakes’ and ‘on Tsunami-Related Disaster Management.’ Fukushima nuclear disaster had triggered fears around the world on the safety of vital nuclear installations in the event of earthquakes, Tsunamis and even at the time of terrorist attacks.
The Karachi incident sparked off worries about terrorist attacks on vital installations.
