Militant killed, another critically injured in Pulwama gunfight

SRINAGAR, OCT 13 : A militant was killed and another injured during a gunfight with the government forces in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday, police said.

A police official said that army men of 55 RR, CRPF personnel and SOG of Jammu and Kashmir Police laid a siege around a cluster of houses in Babgund area of Pulwama town and started door to door search operations around 2am.

Militants hiding in one of the residential houses fired upon the forces, triggering a gunfight, said the official, adding that one militant was killed during the exchange of fire.

The identified the slain militant as Shabir Ahmad Dar, a resident of Samboora. Another militant, identified as Showkat Ahmad and belonging to Muran village of Pulwama, was critically injured in the gunbattle.

Police said Ahmad managed to escape the security cordon and was later admitted by unknown persons in Srinagar’s S.M.H.S hospital. Hospital sources said the militant had sustained a bullet injury in his abdomen, and was stated to be critical.

Authorities reduced high speed mobile internet to 128kbps in Srinagar city late Thursday night that continued for today as well.

Meanwhile Train service remained suspended for the second day for security reasons in south Kashmir. However, train service resumed in north Kashmir after remaining suspended on Friday, when separatists had called for a general strike against the killing of two Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants in an encounter with security forces in Kupwara on Thursday.
