Awantipora, Oct. 29: The Department of Mathematical Sciences, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora, celebrated World Statistics Day 2025 with the theme “Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone.” The event aimed to underscore the crucial role of accurate and accessible data in shaping evidence-based policies, fostering sustainable development, and promoting statistical literacy among students and researchers.

The celebration brought together academicians, professionals, faculty members, research scholars, and students, including Mr. Imtiyaz Ahmad, Director, Jal Shakti Department; Prof. Aquil Ahmad from the Department of Statistics and Operations Research, Aligarh Muslim University; Dr. Fozia Qazi, former Head of the Department; Dr. Farooq Hussain Bhat, Dean, School of Sciences, and Mr. Sajad A. Bagow, a distinguished alumnus of the Department.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Prof. Qazi, spoke on “What Quality Data Means,” stressing that quality data ensures reliability, transparency, and meaningful outcomes. Prof. Aquil Ahmed discussed the “Significance of Statistics in Applied Fields,” highlighting its growing relevance in industry, healthcare, and social sciences. Mr. Imtiyaz Ahmad, shared insights on the role of statistics in day-to-day planning and governance, while Mr. Bagow encouraged students to explore diverse career opportunities in the field.

Earlier, welcoming the participants, Dr. Peer Bilal Ahmad, underscored the pivotal role of statistics in advancing scientific research and informed decision-making. Dr. Farooq Hussain Bhat, Dean, School of Sciences, appreciated the initiative and emphasized the need to promote statistical literacy among students and researchers. The program also witnessed participation of students from government degree colleges.
