Zanskar, October 30: The Government Model Degree College (GMDC), Zanskar started a lecture series sponsored by PM-USHA under Gender Inclusive Equity Initiative (District Kargil). The 4th lecture in the series was held under the supervision of Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi, Principal, GMDC Zanskar.
The program began with the presentation of a traditional khataks by Dr. Jigmet Zazay, (Assistant Professor of Zoology) to the guest and keynote speaker, Miss Lobzang Dolma. It was followed by a welcome address delivered by Ms. Jigmet Chondol, (Assistant Professor of Economics).
The guest speaker Miss Lobzang Dolma, a former Sarpanch, young, dynamic, and educated leader, in her inspiring address, shared her personal journey of becoming a Sarpanch in the 2018 election, and the challanges she faced during her election campaign to earning the trust and support of her community.
She narrated how, despite initial resistance and social barriers, her commitment to education, honesty, and community welfare helped her gain confidence among the people. Her story reflected the power of perseverance and the importance of empowering women through education and leadership opportunities.
Ms. Dolma emphasized the need for well-educated leaders who can make informed decisions for the progress of society. She spoke about the challenges faced by women leaders, such as gender bias, lack of resources, and limited representation in governance, and discussed strategies to overcome them, including mentorship, awareness programs, skill development and community participation.
She also urged the families, communities and educational institutes to support and encourage the women to become a leader, enterpreneur and give opportunity to explore their skill and capabilities.
The program was concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Haider Ali Askary, Assistant Professor of Sociology. As a token of appreciation a souvenir was presented to the guest speaker by Dr. Jamphel, Assistant Professor of English.
Throughout the lecture series, GMDC Zanskar will foster its commitment to promoting gender equity, inclusivity, and empowerment through education and awareness under the PM-USHA initiative.
