JAMMU, JANUARY 31(KMW): Divisional Administration Jammu in collaboration with Voice for Rights today organized a one day workshop on ‘Crime Against Women’ at Brig Rajinder Singh Auditorium, Jammu University.
Justice K. Kannan- sitting judge of Chandigarh High Court was the chief guest on the occasion while the workshop was presided over by the Divisional Commissioner Jammu Shantmanu.
Mrs. Arunima Sinha was the guest of honour; Dr Shujaat Bukhari, Editor-in-Chief Rising Kashmir, Mehran Khan, State Project Manager Handicap International, Kiran Sharma, Director Operations Lawyers Collective New Delhi, Aniditta, Advocate Supreme Court and Sumesh, Center for Justice Ahmadabad were the resource persons.
The event was supported by Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Indian Red Cross Society and Gandhi Global Family.
While speaking on the occasion, Justice K. Kennan stressed upon the gravity of the crime and talked about examples of the recent crime against women. He further exhorted upon the need of strict laws against crime accused.’
“The crime victims in the country have to go through sheer humiliation, as victims cannot come out in open to narrate her case, as we have taboos attached to this particular crime against women,†said Justice K. Kannan, adding that the role of medical and forensic teams would be equally important for the proper investigation, as it can lead to timely justice.
Speaking on the occasion, the Divisional Commissioner said it is unfortunate that such crimes are still happening in the society. “I feel we are not yet properly civilized and such events are necessary to make sections of the society civilized,†he said and added people in the society don’t teach their sons how to treat a woman, which is unfortunate.
He also said that Divisional Administration is working on to organize more such events to end this menace of crime against women.
Advocate Aniditta enlightened the audience about recent amendments in laws concerning crime against women. Mehran khan spoke over the length and breadth of Sexual abuse against women and children with disabilities. He also talked about their inclusion in the society.
Later, Advocate Deepika presented vote of thanks.
Others present on the occasion included lawyers, law students, doctors, police officers and media persons.
