‘Day of mourning’ brings life to standstill in Karachi

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) is observing ‘day of peaceful mourning’ today (Tuesday) across the country and requested all citizens to show solidarity against the killings in Karachi, Geo News reported.
The city is facing a complete shutdown as traders, transporters and fuel station owners decided to keep their regular operations closed after the MQM announced that a ‘day of mourning’ would be observed against the ongoing wave of violence that has claimed nearly 100 lives in less than a week.
The associations of transporters, wholesale and retail markets and fuel stations on Monday evening announced one by one that they would stay away from regular business on Tuesday, blaming police and security administration for failing to protect their businesses in such a situation.
Chairman of All Private Schools Management Association, Khalid Shah said that the private schools would remain closed in the city on today.
However, Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq said that all government schools and colleges would remain open.
The University of Karachi also said that all papers scheduled for Tuesday had been postponed and the new dates for the papers would be announced later.
Controller Exams of Sindh Board of Technical Education (SBTE) and Secretary of Matric Board said that there would be no public dealing today in the respective board offices.
Chairman Karachi Transport Ittehad, Irshad Bukhari said that they would not bring any transport on the roads while the inter-city transport service on Super Highway and good transport will also remain suspended today.
Hyderabad is also facing complete wheel-jam in the city while in Sukkur, all the business activities are closed and no transport is available causing office workers severe problem to reach their offices.
Mirpur Khas and Tando Allahyar were also wearing deserted look on the mourning day while tyres were also burnt in different areas of Tando Allahyar in protest.
