Sankoo, October 09: Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, today inaugurated a private trout fish farm at Karchekhar, Sankoo, established by local entrepreneur Tahir Hussain under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
Expressing satisfaction over the quality of work executed by the farmer and the functioning of the fish farm, Dr. Akhoon commended the initiative and assured full support from the Council in promoting fisheries and aquaculture as sustainable sources of income. He emphasized that efforts are underway to transform rural poverty into prosperity through the development of fisheries and aquaculture.
Acknowledging the entrepreneur’s dedication and hard work, the CEC announced immediate financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for compound walling and safety also to encourage his efforts and inspire other local youth to pursue similar ventures.
Dr. Akhoon further highlighted that fishery-based eco-tourism is emerging as a promising avenue for educated unemployed youth and farmers to develop entrepreneurship, thereby generating employment opportunities in the district. He stressed the need to convert fish farms into multi-dimensional ventures by enhancing the landscape with recreational facilities such as aquariums and angling zones, alongside regular fish production.
Assistant Director, Fisheries Kargil, Mohammad Amin, informed that the fish farm was constructed under PMMSY, a centrally sponsored scheme aimed at promoting sustainable aquaculture and fisheries development across the country.
The inaugural event was attended by Assistant Director Fisheries Mohammad Amin, Sub-Inspector Feroz Ahmad (In-charge Police Post Sankoo), and members of the local community. The villagers expressed their gratitude to CEC Dr. Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon for extending financial support and encouragement under the PMMSY scheme.
