5 Army, 2 BSF jawans swept away in avalanche

Srinagar: Five Army personnel and two BSF jawans of a joint patrol party were swept away in a snow avalanche near the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir today.

A BSF spokesman said that a joint patrol party of Army and BSF were patrolling near Farkiyan Gali in Keran sector this morning at 0730 hrs.

All the seven members of the party –5 Army and 2 BSF personnel–were swept away.

However, immediately rescue teams were rushed to the spot from nearby forward pickets, he said adding that so far body of BSF Sub- Inspector Narinder Kumar has been recovered.

Search for other Army personnel and BSF jawan Rajesh Kumar was still on, he said.

Defence ministry spokesman Lt Colonel J S Brar said that a major rescue operation has been launched.

He said Army helicopters have also been pressed into service. (KMW News)
